As recently discussed on our facebook page, there is a growing amount of accidents as a result of black ice this year. That means now is a good time to double check your tires and make sure that you have enough tread to properly stop and navigate in these harsh conditions. While having new or like new tires alone will not prevent you from sliding, having little or no tread will limit your tires ability to grip the road should you need to swerve or make a sudden stop. Also, make sure that you have a clear view of the road.
Before traveling in the winter elements, you may want to ask yourself these questions:
1. Are my Wiper Blades in good working condition? If they streak when you turn wipers on or leave a trail of dirt then they likely need replaced or cleaned. If you cannot see ten feet in front of you, there is little to no chance you could see ice or other winter road hazards.
2. Are all of my lights working properly? This is important for both you and the other drivers on the road. Make sure all of your headlights and fog lights (if equipped ) are working properly. If you cannot see more than ten feet in front of you, there is little chance for you to safely react if something happens. Also make sure that your taillights and reverse lights are all working. If you do have to make a sudden stop and you have a break light out, the driver behind you may not be able to stop before hitting your vehicle.
3. Are my tires "winter ready"? Check the inflation and tread of your tires. If they are low you could have poor handling which in the snow/ice is extremely dangerous. If your tires are bald that will limit your ability to stop and control your vehicle.
